One of the biggest offseason moves in terms of unrestricted free agents joining new teams was none other than Gordon Hayward leaving the Jazz to join his college coach in Boston. Hayward has improved the Celtics in every aspect of the game. His basketball journey is very reminiscent to a super soldier from the Marvel Universe, Captain America. Steve Rogers was a regular guy growing up in New York in the 40's. However, while all of his buddies were joining the Army he was prevented from doing so. He was small and sick, but what he lacked in strength he made up for in determination and will. This was enough for him to be chosen by the Army for their super soldier project that turned Steve Rogers from the sickly kid into a super human now branded as Captain America. Gordon Hayward grew up in Indiana and played basketball and tennis. While the 5'10 Hayward was a great tennis player, he was an average basketball player. While in high school, Hayward had two growth spurts that left him at 6'8 with the skills of a guard. He played two seasons in Butler leading them to the NCAA Final in 2010. He was drafted by the Jazz and has improved in each of his 7 seasons before ultimately joining the Celtics this offseason in a move that has people expecting them to seriously challenge Lebron and the Cavs.
Captain America has heightened strength, speed, and agility as a result of the serum. He also is given a vibranium shield that he uses in combat. He is a master tactician in regards to troops and battle. He is a born leader that will never do anything to harm his friends. He is a force on the battlefield and can swing battles by himself. In the same way Gordon Hayward is a great offensive and defensive basketball player. He is skilled offensively and has become much more comfortable as a playmaker. He has always been a good shooter, but he is so much more physical as a player now. Defensively, he can stay with the best wings in the league and will do whatever his team needs to win. Hayward was willing to be the guy taking shots off the dribble for the Jazz and also be the guy spotted up at the 3 point line. This past season was his best where he shot almost 40% from three while scoring 21 points a game for a 51 win team.
Captain America is seen as a true boy scout in every sense of the word. He does whatever is right and is always honest. He is a soldier that follows his orders, but will not do things that violate his moral code. In the famous Civil War storyline Captain America goes against the government that wants to register all heroes because Captain America sees heroes as trying to do the right thing that is beyond government control in his eyes. The Civil War storyline ends with Captain America arrested by Iron Man. He never cared what any of his friends told him, he did what he thought was right. Gordon Hayward has that same feeling about him as he plays. He plays in the way that his team needs. He could score 25 a night, but he is more about the mission, which is to win. During his time with the Jazz, he made the playoffs twice, this past season winning over 50 games in a season for the first time in his career. However, there was something that he did not agree with when it concerned the Jazz and he decided to join up with Brad Stevens, his college coach, and join the Celtics. He did what he thought was right, now we will see how it ends.
