Superman is one of the most recognizable and popular characters in the world. Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in Cleveland, OH (You cannot make this up) in 1933. Only 70 years later, the Cleveland Cavaliers would use the first pick in the NBA draft to take Lebron James, a kid that grew up in Akron, OH. Lebron James came into the NBA with so much hype that no one believed that he could be that good. Well, 14 NBA seasons later and it is clear to me that Lebron James is the best player to ever play (if you disagree, we will talk later).
Let's start with the background. Superman made himself known in Metropolis stopping bad guys and doing amazing things people had never seen. Lebron James came into the NBA with as much hype as anyone in history and delivered and then some on all of it. He continues to do amazing things on the basketball court despite playing for 14 seasons in the NBA. Superman moved to the big city to help people, but he always comes back to Smallville. Lebron left Cleveland to play in Miami, but he came back to Cleveland.
Superman has super strength, speed, hearing, sight, laser eyes, frost breath, and he can hide himself with just glasses. Lebron has the ability to score from inside and outside, rebound, pass, get steals, block shots, and pretty much anything that can be done on a court. Superman rarely uses his full power because he worries about how he could hurt his opponents, but when he unleashes his full power it is unbelievable. Lebron James coasts at times through the regular season, but watch the 2015 finals and see the best player in the world playing his heart out with every ounce of energy he has.
Superman had his fair share of critics that say that he should do more, he should do less, or that he should not do anything. People blame him for bad things that happen because when you can do anything, why should bad things happen. Lebron gets these same critiques from people that will not let the guy have anything. He didn't score enough, he should've done more, he should've taken the last shot, and on and on it goes. No one in the NBA is held to the same standard as Lebron. If he wins, he was supposed to, but if he loses, it was his fault.
The most famous Superman story ever was The Death of Superman. People could not believe that Superman died. They were shocked. It will be the same when Lebron starts to decline. I remember thinking last season as the Cavaliers were struggling that this is the year that they don't make it to the Finals and Lebron unleashed hell in the playoffs. They eviscerated every team they faced. Lebron was still dominating the game despite having played over 200 playoff games. Superman died fighting Doomsday, a monster with strength and power unlike anything Superman had ever seen. In the fight, Superman delivers a blow to Doomsday that kills the monster, but he loses his life in the process. Lebron is Superman and he had his Doomsday in the 2016 Warriors. He delivered the killing blow in the form of that block in Game 7 that set up Kyrie's shot. That's what people remember, but do not forget that he averaged 29.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 8.9 assists with 2.6 steals and 2.3 blocks per game. No one will ever forget that the Cavaliers beat the Warriors. Much like the Death of Superman, no one could believe that Lebron actually beat them. He is truly the Superman of the NBA.
