Due to the success of the movie franchises Iron Man and the Avengers along with awesome cameos in Spider Man and Captain America, Iron Man has become one of the most popular superheroes for Marvel. What's not to like about Iron Man, he is a really smart guy that builds a suit in order to escape a bad situation. After realizing that in many ways he has stumbled across the perfect weapon, he builds a better suit and decides to start fighting organizations that use his creations for evil. Tony Stark becomes Iron Man.
In regards to Kevin Durant, there is an easy parallel. Kevin Durant was the face of the Oklahoma City Thunder. He had led them to so many wins during his time there and it seemed as if he were always going to play for the Thunder. He had a partner in Russell Westbrook, the Wolverine (letsargueball.weebly.com/superheroes/russell-westbrook-is-the-wolverine) that was also pretty good and there was feeling that he was hurting the Thunder. Everything came to a head in the 2016 Conference Finals. The Thunder were up 3-1 over the Warriors and Durant and Westbrook would get their rematch with Superman James ( letsargueball.weebly.com/superheroes/lebron-james-is-superman) The Thunder ended up losing the series and the Warriors lost in the Finals. It seemed as if KD and Westbrook were destined to continue to fight against the Warriors for years to come and then you started to hear rumblings. Due to a crazy bump in the salary cap, the Warriors would have tons of cap space along with other teams and they might be able to get Durant.
I remember seeing the news and not really believing it. Kevin Durant agrees to sign with the Warriors. All of a sudden, the Thunder were no longer contenders and the team that won 73 games somehow got better. Just like the iron suit that Iron Man made, Durant is the perfect weapon. He is a 7 footer that can handle the ball, can shoot, can pass, can do anything on a basketball court. Not only that, but he wants to win a championship and he fit in with the Warriors and what they do offensively. All of a sudden, Durant was on the hands down favorite to win the championship, which they did. Although throughout the season people tried to start with the things about Steph and KD not meshing, they tried to say the Warriors chemistry was off, but they absolutely cruised through the playoffs on their way to a 16-1 playoff record and a championship, where it took a record setting Cavs performance to even get a game. The Warriors had their amazing team and they added the perfect weapon.
Just like Tony Stark, who was great before he was Iron Man, Durant was great in OKC. He was an MVP, he was the second best player in the league for many seasons, but he was being held back from his full potential by the OKC offense and their other star that needed the ball so much. I have written about Westbrook so much and he is such a huge part of the Durant story. I truly believe that Durant left OKC because he did not want to play with Westbrook. He had the most efficient season of his career and had one of the lowest scoring totals for him in a season averaging just over 25 points per game. That's the interesting part about it though, he did not have to work so hard during the season. He did not have to shoot 20 times a game for his team to win. However, when the Finals came around Iron Man was ready to score and he did having an amazing Finals averaging over 35 points per game in addition to playing great defense.
In the same way that they play up the hatred some people have for Tony Stark in the movies, people did turn on Durant calling him a coward and a loser for joining the Warriors, but I think he is smart. He joined a team that plays a fun brand of basketball that fits his play style. He no longer has to worry about whether or not he is getting enough shots and he gets to win. Kevin Durant is the perfect weapon, Kevin Durant is Iron Man.
