2000-Kenyon Martin (1st pick New Jersey Nets), strong consideration to picking nobody
The 2000 NBA Draft is often thought of as one of the worst drafts in NBA history and I can verify that. Kenyon Martin gets the nod because even though he only played 4 seasons in New Jersey, he made it to two Finals in a row as a starting power forward that put up some good numbers. He even made the all star team in 2004 when the Eastern Conference was not very good.
2001-Tony Parker (28th pick San Antonio Spurs)
Tony Parker was an easy pick because like Manu, he won 4 championships as one of San Antonio's big three. He kept his head down and got better even as San Antonio pursued Jason Kidd to replace him after winning that title in 2003. He has done quite a bit as a Spur including winning the Finals MVP in 2007 even though it should have gone to Duncan, he won it. He also has had a long career with the Spurs and still plays for the team. Thinking about Tony Parker, it's hard to imagine that he actually made the All-Star game 6 times, along with All-NBA 2nd and 3rd team honors a combined 4 times. The craziest stat to me is that he finished in the top 10 in MVP voting in 4 different seasons.
2002-Tayshaun Prince (23rd pick Detroit Pistons), strong consideration to Amare Stoudemire (9th pick Phoenix Suns)
Tayshaun gets the nod over Amare because of winning. While Amare was a huge part of some great Phoenix teams, Tayshaun was a big time starter on a championship team in his 2nd season with the Pistons. He made it back to the Finals the next year and continued to have success in the playoffs. Tayshaun did not put up the stats or numbers that Stoudemire did, but Prince was the 5th starter on some great Detroit teams. He brought his defense and versatility and did what the team needed. Who can forget that crazy block on Reggie Miller? Tayshaun had a great NBA career and the majority of his career was with the team that drafted him. He made the NBA All-Defensive 2nd team 4 years in a row. He was a huge part of some great basketball teams.
2003-Dwyane Wade (5th pick Miami Heat)
Dwyane Wade gets the nod over Lebron James because of winning. Also, Lebron did not win his championship until he left Cleveland and came back so in the imaginary points system that counted against him. Dwyane Wade was the 5th pick of the Miami Heat and quickly became Mr. Heat. He took over South Beach winning a title in 2006 in the midst of an amazing run as one of the dominant guards in the league. He also convinced Chris Bosh and Lebron James to play with him in Miami and won two more titles for the team that drafted him. Dwyane Wade was a 12 time All-Star in addition to being the Finals MVP in 2006. He made All-NBA 1st team two times in addition to multiple 2nd and 3rd teams. Him leaving Miami last season shocked everyone in the league and people could not believe that Wade was not going to play for the Heat. Dwyane Wade had some great moments for the Heat.
2004-Dwight Howard (1st pick Orlando Magic)
Dwight Howard came to the NBA out of high school and so many people including myself thought the Magic should take Emeka Okafor first, but it turns out they made a great decision. Although it ended badly Dwight had some great years in Orlando where they enjoyed some of the most successful seasons they have ever had as a franchise. They made it to the Finals in 2009 and Conference Finals in 2010 before things with Dwight turned bad and he left the team via trade in the summer of 2012. During his time with the Magic Dwight was an All-NBA first team selection 5 times in addition to winning Defensive Player of the Year three years in a row and four top 5 MVP finishes. He was an All-Star numerous times and was a great player for the Magic. I would argue he is the best Magic player in franchise history. He played more seasons than Shaq and had more success.
