The first thing people should know is that Michael Jordan played in a different time. Free agency is extremely common these days. It is so easy for guys to leave their teams and change their situation. They are able to leave their team so easily with little difficulty. During Jordan's time, a player practically had to tell his team that he wanted out especially if he was a superstar. If you look back at the players that changed teams during Jordan's years in the league, the majority of them left via trade. It also was not like Jordan had a great relationship with his front office. He hated Jerry Krause, long time Bulls General Manager, constantly second guessing his decisions.
The second thing people should know is that Jordan played with good teammates. Jordan was not the only good player on the Bulls. After his retirement in 1993, the following season the Bulls finished 55-27 pushing the Knicks to a 7th game in the second round of the playoffs. They were obviously much better with Jordan, but it was not like Jordan was the whole team. Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant were both massively underrated during their careers because they played next to Jordan. People just assumed that they could not play and that all of their success was due to Michael Jordan, which just was not true.
The third thing people should know is that Jordan cared about winning and not hero type I have to take the last shot nonsense. On the Bulls at the end of the game, Jordan should have the ball, but in 1993 he passed the ball to John Paxson and in 1997 he passed the ball to Steve Kerr. Where was the outrage from the media about that I wonder. Did anyone question Michael Jordan's clutch ability? Michael Jordan's career was full of moments was when he did take the last shot and in those instances I guarantee that he knew that he was taking a good shot and with a title on the line refused to force up a shot that would not go into the basket.
The main point of all of this is that the world has changed so much since the days of Jordan playing in the NBA. The way that players are treated is vastly different than in the days of Jordan. There were no podcasts or shows that featured two people screaming at each other for 4 hours and there were not outlets like Twitter that allowed so many people to have a voice. Jordan did not receive any of the criticism that athletes of today receive. If Lebron James treated his teammates the way that Michael Jordan did, everyone would have criticized him about it in the media. Instead, you had to read a book to learn about that kind of stuff or read about it in the newspaper. It was not as accessible as it is today. There was no NBA League Pass, many fans followed the league through box scores and ESPN highlights. The time was different. I say all of this to say that people have to stop pretending that Jordan was perfect. He was a great basketball player, that many say is the greatest of all time, but he did the same things that Lebron James does today and for anyone to pretend otherwise is silly.
