Offensively, Millsap is an 18 points per game player that can score in a number of ways. He rates out as Excellent in Post Up situations scoring 1.004 points per possession. He rates out as Very Good in Isolation and Cut situations. He is a skilled big that can keep defenses honest from deep as well. The most exciting part for Nuggets fans should be that he is going to be paired with Nikola Jokic. Millsap had a great deal of success next to a big with a similar skill set as Jokic when he played with Al Horford. Jokic is in another league as a playmaker and Millsap will benefit from that like the rest of the Nuggets.
Defensively, Millsap is a difference maker despite many saying that he may have lost a step. He makes up for that with his basketball IQ and his knack for making the right play on defense. He is one season removed from finishing in the top 10 in the league in steals as a power forward. He is underrated as a shot blocker and averaged almost one block per game this past season. Where the Nuggets will benefit from Millsap is in his ability to guard the pick and roll. While he will not solve the problem of teams attacking Jokic he can hold his own if he is involved and as a help defender can make the correct play. The Nuggets were terrible defensively last year ranking dead last in the league in overall defensive rating.
Overall, any opportunity to get a player like Millsap should be seized. The Nuggets future is bright and you want to make sure that you do not do anything to jeopardize that. Jokic is a superstar and Millsap will fit right in with him and help his development. Surround Millsap and Jokic with players like Gary Harris and Jamal Murray and Denver should be able to make some noise in their division. All of a sudden, the Northwest Division is intriguing with the Thunder, Timberwolves, Jazz, Blazers, and Nuggets. That is a deep division and should be very competitive.
