Plumlee, one of the brothers from Duke, is a little older and is going to turn 28 at the end of next season when he could be an unrestricted free agent. As I mentioned above, Plumlee has a qualifying offer from the Nuggets, who are not going to give him a big deal after spending their money on Paul Millsap and saving whatever is left for Nikola Jokic. If you have not watched Plumlee play, he is a skilled big man with great athleticism that can throw and catch alley oops. According to Synergy, Plumlee rated out as a Good player offensively. You are not going to build your offense around him, but he is a big man that can pass the ball and is okay to do the dirty work. He is a good offensive rebounder averaging over 2 a game last season despite not playing more than 30 minutes a game. It's unclear what his future is in Denver because Jokic is going to get the minutes at center and I'm not sure if Plumlee is a suitable partner for him. Defensively, Plumlee is solid and does a decent job in the pick and roll. As I mentioned, he is a great athlete and averaged over a block a game last season. To me, given the chance to get more minutes Plumlee will be a solid center that will not hurt your team in any way. He does not take anything off the table, he can plug into an offense as a big man that can pass, but at the same time he does not care if he gets the ball. There are so many teams that he could get minutes for and it will be interesting to see how it plays out for him.
Shabazz Muhammad is coming off a season where he dipped a little bit in his minutes and points, but he still does some things offensively that make him a great risk to take for a 6th or 7th man off the bench or a starter in some cases. Muhammad is going to be 25 at the beginning of the season. His time in Minnesota has been up and down and has included a lot of losing. Muhammad during that time has realized his destiny as a bench player that comes in and tries to score. He averaged almost 10 points a game in 20 minutes a game and only started one game for the Wolves. They definitely would have kept him, but when you have the chance to get Jimmy Butler and Taj Gibson you are willing to let Muhammad go and become an unrestricted free agent. Defensively, Muhammad is not good. He can be a decent defender, but on a team last year full of bad defenders, he fit right in. Offensively, Muhammad can help you. He rated out in Synergy as a Very Good offensive player. In spot up opportunities Muhammad is good and can do some things, but he can really do damage in transition or the post. Muhammad has a knack for getting to the rim in transition and either scoring or drawing fouls. Despite never averaging more than 20 minutes a game, he has averaged almost 3 free throws per game every season. In the post, he was pretty efficient last year averaging 0.942 points per possession in the post. Out of every guy in the league with at least 100 post ups, Muhammad ranked 19th in efficiency. Just like Plumlee, Muhammad is a guy that can help your team offensively. He is an ideal bench guy that can get you buckets while starters rest. Oklahoma City would've loved to have a guy like this last year. There are a lot of teams interested in him, but he has not signed any agreements yet.
Muhammad and Plumlee are two young players that can help teams if they are given the chance. Both have played for four years, where they have not gotten a lot of minutes and if given the opportunity I think they are guys that can help your team get better. It will be interesting to see if any teams are willing to take a chance.
